Big Hearts, Tiny Hands: The Magic of “S for Seva”

By: Madhuri Marri, Pre-K Teacher – Sunday Session 2

In our Bala Vihar classroom, we believe that some of the most important lessons aren’t found in textbooks, but in the spirit of practicing. This week, our S2 PreK explorers took a deep dive into the letter “S,” and the results were nothing short of inspiring.

Equipped with nothing but enthusiasm and small cleaning wipes, these tiny karma yogis transformed our space. From scrubbing surfaces until they sparkled to meticulously lining up shoes outside the door, the physical work was impressive—but the Seva Bhavam (spirit of service) was the real highlight.

The highlights of the session –

Sacred Spaces: The children took great care in cleaning Gurudev’s altar (which was technically already clean), approaching the task with a gentle reverence that was beautiful to witness.

The “Above and Beyond” Moment: Without being asked, two students noticed the teachers’ mats and rushed over to wipe clean them. It’s those spontaneous acts of kindness that prove service is becoming a natural part of their character.

Infectious Joy: As the kids worked, the “service bug” spread. The classroom wasn’t just cleaner; it was lighter, filled with giggles and proud smiles.

The heartwarming moments of watching those tiny feet rise on their toes to reach great heights and those tiny hands reach corners to do a task were magical. Watching them realize that they have the power to improve someone else’s day is exactly why we do what we do as Bala Vihar sevaks and why I find solace in knowing Bala Vihar exists for our next generation.
